Alison Donaldson

Alison is a dedicated paper artist based in Houston, known for her contemporary approach to collage. A self-taught artist, she follows her intuition, allowing creativity to unfold organically. Inspired by her mother’s imaginative use of materials, Alison developed a deep fascination with arrangement, pattern, and repetition. She explores these elements by deconstructing her original artworks and reassembling them into intricate weavings or modern collages.

Her process—free painting, tearing, cutting, and instinctively reconstructing—leads to unexpected and captivating results. Beyond the visual impact, this method serves as a form of personal reflection and healing. Alison’s work is designed to evoke joy and curiosity, inviting viewers to connect with the intricacies of her technique and the thoughtful energy infused into each piece.

She works out of her studio at Silver Street Studios on the Sawyer Yards campus in Houston. She has studied collage and assemblage at the Glassell School of Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. In 2023, Alison was honored to have her work acquired for UTHealth Houston’s corporate collection as part of Gratitude of Art, a curated project compiled into a book for the university’s top donors.

Alison holds a degree from Texas A&M and spent six months in Italy studying art history—an experience that continues to influence her artistic perspective. When she’s not in the studio, she enjoys time with her husband and their high school and college aged sons.
